CJV Sustainability

Driving a Sustainable Future

Our Sustainability Journey

At COLAS Joint Venture, sustainability is not just a goal; it’s a core value that guides our actions every day. We understand the urgent need to address climate change and are committed to leading by example. Our CO₂ Performance Ladder initiative represents our pledge to significantly reduce our carbon footprint and create a more sustainable future for all. The success of Colas JV and Colas has been built on developing solutions to road maintenance which ensure that essential connections are maintained between our communities, regions and cities. As we look towards the road ahead, we are conscious that these connectors need to be maintained and developed more sustainably.

Sustainibility Statement from Gearóid Lohan Colas JV Board Member:

Colas JV are committed to working with TII on this journey to net-zero. Our priority is to reduce the impact of our transport infrastructure on the environment, and we are also developing services to protect and restore the adjacent lands and habitats which are home to many species of flora and fauna. We increasingly see our role as custodians of the land and are already working with environmental experts to develop approaches that protect biodiversity. Include statement on ISO certification, include certificates."

In 2023, Colas JV developed a strategic framework and implementation plan to manage the journey to net zero and to ensure that we continue to lead the market. This framework is built on four key pillars:

1
Decarbonisation

Our agenda is driving energy efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint as we work towards carbon neutrality and better air quality. We’ve set ambitious goals because we believe in the power of decisive action.

Goals;

  • 75% reduction in our carbon emissions by 2025
  • Achieve net zero emissions by 2050
  • 100% of our fleet to run on alternative fuel sources by 2025

Our goal is to become leaders in delivering sustainability, not just through how we operate, but in the goods and services we use. We are committed to using products and technologies that can enable savings in terms of material efficiency and with lower embedded carbon than traditional material, and which are resilient to future climate changes.

Participation:

  1. Galway Hydrogen Hub (GH2) Project

Case Study

Galway Hydrogen Hub

Colas JV is proud to be part of the Galway Hydrogen Hub (GH2) Project – the flagship demonstrator project for the indigenous production and supply of clean green hydrogen fuel for public and private vehicles in Ireland.

GH2 is planned to be fully operational by 2026 and will deliver a multi-modal, zero emission, renewable hydrogen transport hub to initially fuel buses and trucks expanding to ferries, aviation and industrial heat applications. Produced by using renewably generated electricity, green hydrogen holds significant promise to help meet global energy demand while contributing to climate action goals.

Colas JV will pilot the use of hydrogen in our trucks and heavy vans as part of the GH2 Project, further contributing to our own decarbonisation goals as well as those of the wider transport sector and country.

The development of the country’s first Hydrogen Hub is a step forward in positioning Ireland at the strategic centre of renewable energy generation and energy sector integration. This project will drive Irish hydrogen planning forward and act as a mechanism for cross-border knowledge sharing connecting industry, centres of excellence and institutions.

Green hydrogen can also provide security of energy supply, assist in countering long-term energy price fluctuation, and make a significant contribution to reducing Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions and decarbonising the transport sector.

Our commitment to the GH2 Project demonstrates our commitment to sustainability. the energy transition and low carbon transformation actions.

Experiments:

  1. PenTack Active Seal to extend life of pavements
  2. Warm-mix asphalt technologies to reduce energy used in Asphalt production
  3. Valorcol ( Youtube link)
  4. Carbon bio-based binding product ‘Vegecol’ Youtube link)
3
Nature Recovery and Biodiversity

Colas JV are not only responsible for the roads we manage, but the surrounding 1100 hectares of open grass, trees, scrubland, flora and fauna that inhabit there. We have a responsibility to not only ensure that our ecological footprint is as small as possible, but to restore and enhance Ireland’s natural capital wherever possible.

Actions:

  • Became a business supporter of All Ireland Pollinator Plan (Find out more here)
  • Commissioned ecological assessments of our motorway network (MMaRC Network B) ( Find report here)
  • Building awareness of native and endangered species among staff, ( link to the Colas campus environment section : Mes formations (elmg.net), communities and the public (AIPP signboard picture).
  • Completed GIS mapping of landscaping treatments across MMaRC Network B
  • Extensive trials and studies on using non herbicide weed control treatments
  • Foamstream – a system which uses steam as a herbicide free alternative for controlling weed growth on the Network. This system was trialled across the Network during May ‘22. The trial was carried out on a number of junctions on the M6, M7 and M18. CJV has prepared a detailed report on the trial.
  • Pelorganic Acid – Katoun Gold is an herbicide free treatment for controlling weed growth on the Network. Its active ingredient is pelargonic acid, which is naturally occurring and is found in plants. Once applied, it quickly degrades into natural elements, and has no residual action. Colas JV have trialled this product from our Ennis depot.

Ecological and Environmental Assessments

Colas JV have commissioned an ecological and environmental assessment of landscape assets within the road network that we maintain. The assessment will be carried out in 2023 and will inform our Sustainability Strategy and Roadmap to Net Carbon Zero projects.

This assessment will cover 5 km2 of habitat – the size of 46 Croke Parks – selected from a variety of locations around the country in order to be representative of differing soil condition, maturity of planting and local conditions. The assessments we will carry out will include:

  • Classification of existing habitats on site
  • Description & assessment of landscape treatments
  • Assessment of carbon capture value
  • Overview of existing mitigation measures where present (e.g.. mammal proof fencing)

Climate Fresk Workshops

To successfully achieve the strategic transition to a low carbon business model. Colas JV will support its employees through dedicated engagement, training and raising awareness.

A general campaign has been launched across all Colas various business units to raise awareness about climate change using the Climate Fresk Program. These Climate Fresk Employee Workshops facilitate participants to study the causes and consequences of climate change based on scientific data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Reports and will be a valuable tool in spreading awareness of climate change throughout the organisation.

The first Climate Fresk Workshop in Ireland took place at our Oranmore Offices on the 6th September 2022. It was facilitated by Colas Environmental Director Anne Laure Levent. Colas JV are committed to ramping up the delivery of these training initiatives. with four staff already dedicated to train as facilitators in January 2023 and qualifying them to facilitate future staff workshops.

By the end of 2023, all Colas JV staff will have participated in a Climate Fresk Workshop and the initiative will be integrated into our staff induction going forward.

CO2 Performance Ladder:

Ireland’s climate targets aim to reduce carbon emissions by 51% by 2030 and to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Through its scale and spending, green procurement in the construction sector has the potential to positively aid Ireland in reaching these vital targets.

COLAS joint venture is tracking carbon footprint via CO2 Performance Ladder. It is a tool that can help organisations embed green procurement into their organisation in an accessible and structured way.

It consists of 5 levels and an organisation that is certified on a certain level adheres to the requirements of the CO2 Performance Ladder. These requirements are based on four angles, namely:

  • Insight: To determine different streams of energy and the carbon footprint of the organisation.
  • Reduction: To develop ambitious goals for the reduction of CO2 emissions.
  • Transparency: To structurally communicate about organisation policies of CO2 reduction.
  • Participation: To take part of business sector initiatives with regards to the reduction of carbon emissions
